High Holy Days at Congregation Beth Israel - 2022

RE-ENGAGE! REOPEN! RETURN!
REDEDICATE! RECONSTRUCT!

Beginning on Rosh Chodesh Elul (August 28) the blasts of the shofar heralded the new year and each day continues to call us to the task of looking inward as we prepare to do teshuvah – to repent, to return, to make positive change. Our services during these Days of Awe (Yamim Nora’im) gather the entire community together to engage with this important spiritual work.

We want to inform you, as much as we currently can, of how our observances of the Days of Awe will unfold this year, and to invite your participation in sacred service during this year’s High Holy Days. The schedule below, with a printable version on the left, lists the dates and times of events during this season of repentance, reflection, and celebration. And this year, for the first time in three years, all our Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services will be in person, in our sanctuary. We ask that all who come to those services be fully vaccinated against Covid, and remain masked except when leading prayers. Of course, even with those precautions, not everyone will find it comfortable to attend in person, and for those persons we are pleased to be able to announce that all services in the sanctuary will be livestreamed and available to watch via Zoom

Machzor for Zoom services: If you need a machzor (High Holy Days prayerbook) to follow along at home, please contact Larry Hamermesh or Miriam Sigler.

Here are some highlights about how our observances of the Days of Awe will unfold this year; scroll down for the schedule and links to register for certain services and events.

  • For Selichot (Saturday, September 17), Kehillot congregations are invited to come to a performance of "Oh, G-d" by Theatre Ariel, followed by Selichot services led by Rabbi Linda, along with other rabbis.
  • On Erev Rosh Hashanah (Sunday evening, September 25), there will be a young family gathering, a festive Rosh Hashanah dinner planned potluck, followed services in person in the sanctuary.
  • Weather permitting, an intergenerational combined Tashlich and shofar service will be held at Smedley Park on Monday afternoon, September 26 at 12:30pm, after the conclusion of that morning’s services, which will be in the sanctuary.
  • Services on the second day of Rosh Hashanah (Tuesday, September 27) will also be in person, in the sanctuary.
  • Finally, our Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur services will be held in the sanctuary.
  • Then, we move into the festivals of Sukkot and Simchat Torah and all of their joyous events!
