Activities
Our community is one of the biggest things that make Beth Israel so special. We are grateful to those who give their time in various ways through our committees and groups, and encourage our members to join whichever ones they feel drawn to. If you’d like to connect with the leader of a specific committee(s) or want more information, please email the office and they will be happy to direct you.
Adult Education Committee
Our Adult Education Committee provides free, educational events that cover topics such as Torah, ethics, lifecycles, and culture. Click here for more information.
Anti-Racism Coordinating Committee
The Anti-Racism Coordinating Committee (ARCC) works to educate the community on racial injustice, and has taken strides to learn about and embrace anti-racism through educational events and special guests.
BIMAS
BIMAS, or the Beth Israel Music Appreciation Society, is the congregation’s klezmer band, and the principal outlet for instrumental music performance by its members. They regularly play at B'nai Mitzvah and other worship services at Beth Israel and occasionally perform in other private and public local venues. Anyone who plays a musical instrument is welcome to join.
Book Club
The BI Book Club meets once a month to discuss books of Jewish interest, chosen each month by the group. Noshes provided!
Chorus
Beth Israel’s chorus welcomes all post-Bar/Bat/B’nai Mitzvah congregants who are willing to learn new music. Their goal is to spread the joy of harmonious Jewish melodies to the congregation and local community.
Education Committee
The Education Committee for our school works hand-in-hand with our Hebrew School Education Director to create an inviting place for our children to learn. Their committee plans and assists with special events and programs for the children and parents involved in the school, and connects the school to activities within the congregation and our surrounding Jewish community, as well as throughout the world.
Facilities Committee
The Facilities Committee works to keep our buildings and grounds safe to traverse and enter.
Israeli Dancing
Israeli dance sessions are held once a month and led by an experienced teacher. Dances range from beginner level, with instruction on basic steps, to more advanced. No experience or partner necessary.
Knitting Group
The Knitting Group meets once a month to make hats and scarves for a variety of causes, including the military, the Lankenau NICU, and chemo units, as well as blankets for the homeless.
Membership Committee
The Membership Committee is the first point of contact for prospective members, and works to ensure that members both newly joined and not can make the most of their time with Beth Israel.
Religious Practices Committee
The Religious Practices Committee works to help shape Shabbat, festival, High Holy Day, and life cycle services in a way that meets the spiritual needs of our members.
Rosh Chodesh
The Rosh Chodesh is a group for all women members of Beth Israel to come together, either at BI or a member hostess’ house, to share knowledge and food.
Social Action Committee
The Social Action Committee is committed to Tikkun Olam, or “repair of the world”. They do this in part by gathering to hold clothing and food drives for the community, providing academic tutoring in Chester, and holding their annual “A Better Start for Babies” Drive, which donates needed items to newborns and parents at ChesPenn. Click here for more information.
Tech Committee
Our Tech Committee works to make sure our Shabbat services and other events can be broadcast to those unable to attend in person, as well as ensures that our buildings are up-to-date with technological equipment that has to do with our security and religious practices.
T’micha
T'micha, or the practice of friends helping friends, acts as a support network, confidentially reaching out to our Beth Israel congregation. Similarly, the practice of bikkur cholim, visiting the sick, is a great mitzvah to give and to receive. Beth Israel’s T'micha committee brings these important services to our community.
