Torah Treks (in person and streamed online)
Sunday, February 8, 2026 • 21 Shevat 5786
10:30 AM - 12:00 PMJoin us in person or on Zoom for Torah Treks, led by Rabbi Dr. William Plevan: "Caring as Resilience and Resistance."
Doing acts of care (Chesed) is central to Jewish ethics and the life of a Jewish community. In times of distress, oppression, and subjugation, how can acts of care become sources of resilience and tools of resistance? In our learning together, we will consider the teachings of Martin Buber on the religious, ethical, and political significance of care and then turn to two examples of caring from significant moments in Jewish historical memory: the Hebrew Midwives in Egypt and the lives of women in Nazi death camps during the Shoah. What can we learn from their acts of care for others about resilience and resistance in the face of violence and hatred? What do these examples tell us about our everyday acts of care and their religious meaning?
