Most Beth Israel members are currently subscribed to one or more of the email lists listed on the right. Please check the BI Membership Directory for more information about our email lists.

Moderated lists: The largest lists, Congregation and School, are moderated. This means every email is approved and checked for accuracy and appropriateness by the Email Coordinator before it is distributed to the entire list. The purpose of this is obviously to intercept email of an undesirable or inappropriate nature. All other lists are unmoderated, which means that an email sent to the list gets distributed without first being checked. Regardless, only members of a list may send mail to the rest of the list, so that nobody from outside BI can send email to the members of an BI email list.

'Closed' lists: All BI email lists are 'closed', i.e., only members of a list are permitted to send email to that list. This ensures privacy and prevents email spam. Also, members must send email from the address with which they've subscribed to the list. So if you subscribed with your home email address, but try to email the list from your work email address, the email will be rejected.

Virus Scanning: All email from BI, regardless of which list it comes from, is virus-scanned.

How to subscribe to or unsubscribe from a list: Contact the Email Coordinator directly. List membership is controlled by the Email Coordinator for obvious security reasons.

If your email to a moderated list does not get distributed immediately: Remember that a "real" person (the Email Coordinator) has to view the email and approve it. Sometimes this person is away from their computer for an extended period of time and may not see your email right away. BE PATIENT! Rather than resending your email, please wait until the end of the day, and if the email is still not distributed, contact the Email Coordinator directly. If your email is of an emergency nature, immediately contact the synagogue office and they will direct you to the appropriate person.

Forum (unmoderated): A general discussion group, which can be used by members to share information they feel may be of interest to others, ask for advice or help in finding services, sell items, etc. Members are automatically subscribed to this list but may unsubscribe by contacting the Email Coordinator.

School (moderated): For school messages that all parents, students and teachers should receive. There are also individual lists for each class, which are listed in the BI Directory.

SchoolEvents (unmoderated): A special school list to be used specifically for school messages that require an RSVP regarding a specific event or activity.

Faculty (unmoderated): For discussions among faculty members.

BIMAS (unmoderated): For Beth Israel Music Appreciation Society members.
