Beth Israel Book Club

On selected Sunday evenings throughout the year, a book with a Jewish theme will be discussed at a member's home, followed by dessert. The first book this season, "History of Love" by Nicole Krauss was discussed Sunday, September 30, at 7:30PM. The second book this year, was "The Yiddish Policemen's Union" by Michael Chabon.

The next books we are considering these future books:

1) Memoirs of Glueckel of Hameln by Gluckel. February 3, 2008. This is a journal kept by a Jewish woman of her life in a Stetl in the 18th century. The host is Sharon Boyd and the leader will be Enrico Landau

2) Rashi's Daughter (Book 1, Joheved) by Maggi Anton. March 30, 2008. The host are Bob and Bobbie Colemans and the leader is Judy Goodrobb.

3) Mazel by Rebecca Goldstein. June 1, 2008 at 7:30PM. The hosts are Mort and Gloria Rabinowitz and the leader will be Elaine Safer.

New members are always welcome. We are sure you will find the discussions lively and interesting.

Jewish Alive and American 2-NEW!
Monday evenings 7:30-9:30
September 10, 2007 - May 7, 2008
Developed and taught by Helen Plotkin

How do traditions come down to us through the strands of Jewish civilization? What are their sources and how are they expressed by the Bible, the Talmud, the kabbalists, the Jewish philosophers, poets, and commentators?

How are traditional customs and beliefs reconstructed in contemporary Jewish communities? How can they be compelling in our own lives? What are the practices that can make Jewish life more meaningful for us in the synagogue, in our homes, and in the world?

The fee for this thirty-week course is $150. Partial or full subsidies are available to B.I. members for whom the cost is prohibitive. (Please see Rabbi Linda Potemken) Phone 610 566-4645 to register.

Helen Plotkin is the director of the Center for the Study of Classical Jewish Texts at Swarthmore College, a fourth-year student at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, and a member of Beth Israel.

This course is open to those who have completed Jewish Alive & American 1, or who have Helen’s permission to participate.
